Death and taxes.

by Syd Briscoe

WealthSimple: “Frankenstein” - 60s

It's an oft-quoted adage that the only guaranteed things in life are death and taxes, and this philosophical commercial from Canadian firm Wealth Simple suggests the two are not mutually exclusive. The monochrome film sees Frankenstein's Monster contemplate the very nature of his existence - as prompted by a question on the advertised company's site.

Carel Struycken (who eagle-eyed viewers will recognise as 'The Giant' from the original Twin Peaks series) provides a lovely performance as the reanimated monster, who adopts a cerebral approach to determining his own mortality. Charming incidental details offer moments of humour and humanise the character, as he reads in the bath or makes his lights flicker by licking a battery.
