Time to reflect.

by Syd Briscoe

Vodafone: “Gift of Connection” - 40s

Secret Santa takes on a new meaning in Vodafone's altruistic Christmas campaign. The ad from agency Ogilvy and director Jack Driscoll encourages people to donate their used handsets so more people can stay connected this winter; thus, people dress up St Nick-style in their reflections as they head off to do the good deed of the season.

Brief glimpses of the red suit are integrated well into the holiday rush, and the result is a useful twist on the mobile network's connection meme. It reminds us that we are all 'Santa' as we buy gifts for our nearest and dearest, and the daring subtlety of the execution obliges the viewer to pay a bit of attention when they clock the reflections, and this really helps to land the idea.

Like O2 before them, the brand highlight digital poverty as the pandemicís technical demands persist. Coupled with their move into full fibre broadband, it may be a busy Christmas and New Year for the red team.
