Fear of Filth

by Syd Briscoe

Vanish: “Carpetphobia” - 40s

Those whose germaphobia has increased during the pandemic need not fear - Vanish has a solution for even the most trodden-in carpet muck. At least according to this amusing commercial, which sees a family so terrified of their filthy floors that they refuse to step foot on them. Given the purpose of floors, this creates quite an issue.

Director Sye Allen takes a wry approach to the nicely silly concept, as a bloke looks in through the window to see his neighbour climbing the furniture. His bemused reaction consolidates the comedy, and spurs the family into cleansing action. One questions if the obligatory CG dirt-lifting sequence is really necessary in 2021, but this makes for a droll watch besides.
