The Weeknd: “Sacrifice” - 4 mins 03s

Photosensitive epilepsy sufferers look away now - this sleek promo for The Weeknd's 'Sacrifice' makes extensive use of strobe lighting and flashing imagery. Both are rendered very effectively by directing duo Cliqua, who draw viewers into a sci-fi world in which veiled figures sap the singer's life force for their own gain.

The film is caught somewhere between Star Wars and Hellraiser, as The Weeknd (aka Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) is all but crucified on a rotating frame and shocks flow through metal gauntlets to wither his captors. Incidental design details like a mic stand bedecked in chains only increase the film's otherwordly feel.

Flashes of colour against the bleakness give added heft to the singer's soaring tones, effectively meshing visuals and vocals and drawing viewers deeper into the film. This track says disco is back in fashion for 2022, while the accompanying promo suggests there's still darkness on the dance floor.
