Sweaty Betty: “Journey to Womanhood” - 88s

A one-two punch of contemporary dance and poetry often rings alarm bells at DAVID, so this 90" ad for Sweaty Betty is a pleasant surprise. Featuring dancer Federica Somma and spoken-word artist Sophia Thakur, the piece explores how childish brio ("She wore her muddy knees like a medal around legs") is often replaced by teenage doubts ("They compare each other's figures/Instead of figuring out what this new body can do").

As Thakur's delivery gathers momentum into adulthood, Somma responds with an increasingly elaborate routine that also foregrounds the brand's International Women’s Day-themed activewear. It's a strong, colourful product demonstration, and complements the poet's call for women to rediscover their spark and "feel a renaissance in their skeletons".
