Pin Drop

by Syd Briscoe

Sia: “Pin Drop” - 4 mins 01s

This arresting promo for Sia's 'Pin Drop' has an absorbing, otherworldly feel. The track comes from the artist's recently-released Christmas album, but the visuals eschew any festive glitz in favour of exploring the darker side of the season. The most wonderful time of the year can be incredibly lonely for many, after all.

The promo's sandy floor and opaque lighting create a strange sense of being underwater, ensuring that audiences are fully absorbed in the song's feeling of disconnection from the outside world. Dancers move as though compelled by some outside force, reaching for connection and understanding but never quite finding what they seek.

It's an unexpected approach and not one which immediately comes to mind when one thinks 'Christmas song', but makes a whole lot of sense in a post-lockdown world. Kudos to director Jacob Jonas and DOP Jessica Young for fully embracing the oddness and giving us a melancholic, thought-provoking take on the holidays.
