Stay Awake

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Wake Up” - 5 mins

This confrontational film about the Black Lives Matter movement addresses a widespread fear that is already beginning to play out: people will return to comfortable apathy once the hashtags stop trending. Written and performed by Aflo. the poet and Priss Nash, it's a powerful message that becoming woke isn't enough - you need to stay awake.

Director Sam Parish-Rookes keeps things tightly focused on the poets, allowing their fury to lead the film and make it impossible for viewers to look away. Snippets of footage inserted at appropriate moments (Grenfell Tower, George Floyd, Rashan Charles... among far too many others) keep the reality of racism front and centre, placing the poem's passionate lyricism into stark perspective.
