Alone Together

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Unmasked” - 12 mins 42s

Unusual connections have been formed by many of late - despite and often because of - the restrictions of lockdown. Online clubs have flourished, bringing people together over interests from drinking to crochet, and socially-distant claps and street-wide singalongs have many knowing their neighbours better than before.

This intriguing short film from Steve Reeves, however, takes things a step further. A woman is confronted with a difficult situation when she accidentally trips another jogger, inviting him into her home despite the dangers. What follows is the sort of intimate chat usually reserved for late nights, but, as many have observed in quarantine, time isn't real anymore.

With both characters masked and their physical movements restricted by fear of contamination, the film adroitly captures the unique mix of anxiety and introspection that has become familiar to so many during isolation. We won't spoil the ending, but the final scene is deeply poignant and will leave audiences contemplating all the touches they've missed over the past months.
