Short Films: “The Swimmer” - 14 mins 55s
This taut short film stars Francesca Shand as a swimmer who sees visions of wild animals and violent weather while training. No, she hasn't mainlined nature documentaries during lockdown - this is her ongoing trip into the zone. As a major competition approaches, she's advised to seek a unicorn instead of sharks and wolves. Easier said than done. Yet what grips across fifteen minutes is the methodical, not the mythical. Director Hadi Shuaib eschews needless dialogue for brief, telling exchanges and pure exertion. One sequence involving an ice bath is particularly gruelling, as the battle between the mind and the body reaches its carthatic conclusion. It may be too stark for some, but others should let it wash over them.
