Short Films: “The Space Between Us” - 1 min 45s

This timely short film arrives as the extent of screen overtime during the coronavirus pandemic becomes clearer. Directed by Stuart Langfield, the piece matches smartphone users with a playful yet intrusive electronic soundtrack, turning dances, workouts, and even trips to the playground into online/offline hybrids.

Langfield and DP Gavin White's compositions are well-judged, with wide shots emphasising how isolated each cast member really is. The busiest the screen gets is when multiples of the same woman walk down a staircase, lost in her/their phone. Furthermore, there is something unsettling about looking at people looking at screens.
