Khaen-hearted man.

by Andrew MacGregor

Short Films: “Thai Country Living” - 15 mins 25s

This inviting documentary offers those yet to find their lockdown instrument of choice a new alternative: the khaen. Set in rural Thailand, the film centres on a farmer and khaen maker determined to keep the traditional mouth organ alive.

Directors Tubby Brother strike it lucky with Suman - a warm, single-minded character who rejects help in the kitchen (“When other people cook, it doesn’t match my taste”), befriends his cattle, and is fuelled by music. Needy chickens aside, it's a good life.

Meanwhile, his aversion to city living speaks to viewers wary of overcrowding and overstimulation. Even if a move to Southeast Asia is out of the question, Suman's craftsmanship and community spirit are definite takeaways.
