Short Films: “On Lockdown” - 1 min 41s

Calum Macdiarmid’s atmospheric short film uses brooding animation to convey the monotony of lockdown. As Macdiarmid flits between scenes of picturesque inertia, poet Todd Boss’s dour VO contemplates how lockdown has warped our concept of time and sharpened our awareness of inequalities across the globe.

Visually, ‘On Lockdown’ evokes Edward Hopper, but there are also traces of independent video games like ‘Earthworms’ and ‘Kentucky Route Zero’ throughout Macdiarmid's film. The result is a short but satisfying addition to the lockdown canon, though anyone desperate for escapism after months of soul-searching may want to look elsewhere.
