Finders keepers?

by Andrew MacGregor

Short Films: “Last Stop for Lost Property” - 12 mins 49s

Loss is a fact of life on the New York City Subway. Phones, wallets, bags, clothes, and even turtles have been lost in the system, but this likeable documentary shows where commuters may still enjoy a happy reunion: the subway's lost property office in Penn Station.

Narrator and subway veteran Sonny Drayton explains how "mindlessly moving" riders navigate the city, oblivious to what they've left behind before it's too late. They must then rely on fellow passengers willing to notice and connect enough with an object to save it.

Drayton—who packs all of his posesssions into an Alta suitcase—also calls out the way individuals like him are both seen and unseen on the subway... a salient reminder of how dulled our senses have become as the daily rush resumes.
