Short Films: “Home Stream” - 11 mins

A homeless woman tells her story in heartbreaking detail in this hard-hitting short film. Created by Giulia Gandini, the piece lets London street resident Lily film her life on her own terms - showing the reality of what it means to be without housing in the UK. Given that the homelessness crisis has been intensified further by the pandemic, it's insight that couldn't be more timely.

Lily makes for a striking documentary subject, open and candid as she articulately explains how she left an abusive marriage and ended up on the streets. Her story of finding love and companionship in crisis speaks to the resilience of the human spirit, which makes the reveal that she lost them again deeply affecting. Despite it all, she perseveres.

Moving and enlightening in equal measure, this film is an excellent example of why marginalised voices need to be given the space - and uplifted, when needed - to speak their own truths. Kudos to Gandini and co. for their light touch in shaping this poignant story - one which is sadly repeated all over the country.
