The Whole Truth

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Eyewitness” - 6 mins

The reality of the Covid-19 pandemic is thrown into horrifying relief in this cautionary short film. It follows the work of photojournalist Adam Gray, who's been documenting the true extent of the devastation the virus has wrought on New York City.

Gray's frustration is obvious as he relates hearing fellow Brits discuss the pandemic like it's no big deal - something many of us have become deeply familiar with. Comments about people acting like it's a summer holiday back home seem especially grotesque when paired with shots of sheet-covered gurneys, fully masked medical staff, and mass graves.

The photographer's perspective is given additional weight by his previous work, which includes covering the Calais Jungle fire and the Syrian refugee crisis. "This is our world war," he concludes, and it's a stark reminder that whatever our economically-minded leaders seem to think, we still have a long battle to fight.
