What You Pay For

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Craving” - 4 mins 17s

We've all gone a bit gaga craving food we can't have in lockdown at one point or another, but Greg Barth takes things to a whole new level in this surreal film. His fever-dream short blends online porn with, er, jacket potatoes, as a bloke attempts to satisfy his tuber lust from afar.

The isolated office set is wonderfully minimalist, retro with just a hint of unreality poking at the seams (the jelly egg salad monstrosity initially featured on the wall calendar is a good example). Add to this a self-aware, deeply amusing central performance from Rodrigo Penalosa, and it's an aesthetic treat.

Amid so much understandably emotional and poignant content produced as lockdown eases, it's refreshing to have something so irreverent and funny emerge from such a troubled time. Worth a second watch just to let the microwave-cum-cam-show sink in.
