Not Just a Salad

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Caesar's Last Wish” - 2 mins 19s

Sketch comedy duo Tom Blackwood and Alex Cooper (aka Mid-Brow) lampoon both egotistical leaders and seductive food ads in 'Caesar's Last Wish'... not an easy feat in less than two-and-a-half minutes. The pair cram in plenty of laughs despite the film's brief runtime, taking on the roles of Caesar and Caecilius as the former lays dying.

An exchange between the emperor - fussy about his image even in death - and his minion enhance the pair's great performances, as Caecilius struggles to summon enough of an ego stroke to send his friend to the colosseum in the sky. There is one form of memorial, however, which exceeds months of mourning and statues in terms of longevity.

Then familiar music starts and Blackwood slips into the affected cadence of M & S's 'This is not just...' campaign. Self-conscious food photography only bolsters the humour, with gloriously globby salad dressing application finally seeing the great dictator shuffle off this mortal coil.
