Short Films: “Bella and Lucas” - 3 mins 04s

This tactile short film from director Leo Leigh explores self-actualisation and self-discovery through video games. Written by Dutch poet Marieke Lucas Rijneveld (who is currently mired in controversy after withdrawing from translating inauguration poet Amanda Gorman's work into their native language), the piece examines what queer identities mean in a space where you design your own character.

The Sims is, after all, fertile ground for self-expression of all kinds - something which makes the film relatable to a wide range of viewers. Using static scenes of hand-painted models also increases the short's universal feel, as it creates a sense of being both tangible and a step left of reality - a liminal place where rules don't apply. Thought-provoking work for the contemplative crowd.
