Short Films: “All Cracked Up” - 3 mins 08s
Spare a thought for professional writers this year, as they bid to raise a smile (or an eyebrow at least) with their material. This three-minute short focuses on one such scribe, who, like Monty Python’s Ernest Scribbler, needs an instant classic. Alas, he must suffer for his art. Cue an amusing, exasperating, and caffeine-fuelled tale of trial and error, as the writer strains for anything remotely worthy of publication. The constant screech of paper from typewriter to bin tells you everything thing you need to know about his progress. Director Simon Neal piles on the absurdity well, with chickens, evidence boards, and, er, cream liqueur on cornflakes among the highlights. Depending on your tolerance of a particular genre of humour, the ending is either devastating or fully justified.
