Your Eyes Only

by Syd Briscoe

Royal Navy: “Submariners” - 60s

Naval life is given an air of mystery in this intriguing film from Engine and director Greg Hackett. Featuring eerie sound design and thoughtfully-chosen shots of submariners at work and play, it emphasises the diverse experiences recruits can expect while travelling the world.

Parts of the film are pixelated or otherwise redacted (a club scene with patrons' eyes hidden is particularly striking), which lends the piece a sense of exclusivity. While their Army counterparts focus on ensuring everyone feels welcome, this campaign suggests one needs to be something special to make it underwater.

That's not to say it's all hard graft, of course. With camaraderie-building activities like iceberg kickabouts and, er, mutual hot-tubbing prominently featured, this ad appeals to both wannabe-007s and those searching for something beyond a desk job. Or those who'll trade life in a metal tube for travel, anyway.
