Royal Navy: “Raj's Story” - 60s

The Royal Navy's latest recruitment campaign focuses on cultural diversity, and this 60" film explores one recruit's roots across two worlds. Director Sashinski plays the past and present off against each other as he delves into the story of Lieutenant Raj, who struggled to reconcile his Sikh background with his UK childhood.

The parallels between finding a sense of belonging in the Navy and within one's own culture are intriguingly drawn, with flashes of visually similar shots across time showing Raj as boy and man all at once. A nostalgic grade and low-fi approach from DOP Hunter Daly ensure that viewers of all stripes feel the emotional weight of his journey to self-acceptance.
