Generation Generate

by Syd Briscoe

Red Bull: “Spark” - 6 mins 54s

Red Bull ads normally swing between scrappy animation and high-octane adrenaline rushes, so this sci-fi short courtesy of director Mike Fisher is a welcome change of pace. The film focuses on 'conductors' - people with an implant which allows them to generate tremendous amounts of energy by experiencing strong emotions.

While the dance-off ending feels like a cop-out, everything leading up to it is intriguingly executed. With users able to choose between generating via positive or negative emotions (think ‘Monsters Inc.’, but for people), it's a thought-provoking look at the concept of energy itself. Stronger than a caffeine kick, at least.
