Momentous Moments

by Syd Briscoe

RAF: “Decisions” - 60s

Split-second decisions take place in all avenues of life, but some can be the difference between heroic salvation and devastating disaster. That's the case in this tense ad for the RAF, which presents a scenario that its radar operators could face at any given moment.

A plane not responding to radio communication could have any number of causes - from simple equipment failure to the ever-present spectre of terrorism. It's up to the operator to make the call on how to respond: scramble jets, alert the government, or wait for more information.

An overly-murky look doesn't do the action any favours in terms of visual clarity, but it does heighten the piece's cinematic feel. Each scenario plays out like a mini-movie, with a potential hijacking left mainly to the viewer's imagination.

Director David Dearlove amplifies anticipation throughout, bringing the tension to a fever pitch before leaving the audience to question how they would respond in such a situation. It'll certainly put off those who couldn't handle such responsibility... DAVID's sweating just thinking about it.
