Police Recruitment: “Life as a Black Police Officer” - 4 mins 25s

Released shortly after Stephen Lawrence Day and the trial of Derek Chauvin, this eloquent film features a police interview of a different kind. A serving Black officer answers questions about life on the force, and how more like him are needed to repair decades of mistrust.

His interviewer is a former cadet who left over concerns about his appearance and multiple stop-and-search incidents. Over four-and-a-half compelling minutes, the two men discuss the past, present, and future of law enforcement.

Most pointedly, the officer notes that "conversations like this have given us seats at tables that we should have been sitting at a long time ago." The hope is that candid work like this persuades more diverse candidates to join the conversation at all levels of the police.
