Wet and Winning

by Syd Briscoe

National Lottery: “Water Park” - 60s

A woman transforms her hometown into a water park in this cheery ad for the Irish National Lottery. Rather than keep schtum about her win around her friends and neighbours, she instead creates a false front for Rathlooney so they can enjoy their new amenities without being bothered by the outside world.

There's a lovely sense of fun here, as a central figure wanders around in a pink dressing gown while the rest of the townsfolk slide down curly tunnels, splash around in the shallows, and float along their newly pristine waterways. She's even got her broom on hand when one guy needs a bit of a push to get moving.

It's a sunny look at the fantastical ways one's winnings could be spent, and should encourage those on the fence to have a flutter in the hopes of a jackpot draw. We would like to know how much a Truman Show-style screen costs for a whole town, though.
