Australian department store Myer prepare for what they refuse to accept as a gloomy Christmas with this entertaining festive ad. Although previous years have featured camping trips with Santa and animated elves, 2020 demands a different approach. A year without celebration, the brand claims, should at least end on a party.
Director Nick Kelly is in fine form here, bringing together disparate elements of orchestral brides, dancing dragons, and gloomy high school graduates to ensure everyone gets their turn in the spotlight. A lead singer ties the film's different aspects together nicely, uniting everyone who's lost out this year under the same cause.
While a huge physical celebration on Christmas Day may not be advisable, the ad's sentiment offers a swell of hope. Acknowledging how weird things have been while looking toward a tentatively promising future feels revolutionary right about now... even if the audience Down Under are in a better position than most for the big day.
