Smoke Signals

by Syd Briscoe

Meat & Livestock Australia: “The Lost Country of the Pacific” - 3 mins

Australia is cut off from the outside world in this amusing commercial to promote lamb consumption. A student discovering a toy with a 'made in China' label is the key to unlocking the wider world once more, as an enterprising professor develops an ingenious plan to contact outsiders via giant smoke signal.

There's a mix of international content and purely Australian humour here, with jokes about conspiracy theorists and billionaires (Jeff Bezos' cowboy hat is a nice touch) sitting comfortably alongside mentions of Covid bubbles and lockdowns in Victoria.

This is a great example of a country making stereotypes work for them, as Australia cheerfully embraces its barbeque-heavy reputation. It's also a lovely way for Aussies to remind people, after years of strict quarantine procedures, that they're still open for business... providing you're not a Serbian tennis player with a visa application written on an Etch-a-Sketch.
