I Love You, I Hate You

by Syd Briscoe

Little Simz: “I Love You, I Hate You” - 4 mins 40s

Generational trauma and parental abandonment propel this intriguing promo for Little Simz 'I Love You, I Hate You'. The British-Nigerian rapper articulates her feelings towards her absent father here, musing about whether forgiveness is the best thing to do for herself as she addresses her parent directly ("Is you a sperm donor or a dad to me?").

The accompanying promo is directed by Jeremy Ngatho Cole, and frames Simz as both artist and interrogator as she reflects on her father as an adult and young man by turns. Cinematographer Nathalie Pitters has done a skilful job of building the film's visual language, with a sepia-tinged look which gives the piece the feeling of being slightly outside time - a place of reflection and, perhaps, resolution.
