Lil Nas X: “Holiday” - 2 mins 47s

Cowboy-rap smash-hit 'Old Town Road' may feel like a hundred years ago now (in fact, it was released in May of 2019... we were shocked too), but Lil Nas X is determined to keep the party going with Christmas single 'Holiday'. Camp, cool, and unsurprisingly catchy, it's just what we need to limp over the finish line of 2020.

If there's anything to be said about Lil Nas X, it's that the guy knows how to write a pop song. With tracks never exceeding three minutes and focused around beats and verbal hooks, it's impossible to hate the sheer hustle he brings to ensuring his songs take root in listeners' brains. This promo takes a similar approach: each of the singer's looks has calculated meme-potential, and every scene is shot for maximum visual impact.

That's not to say that Nas is a comedy artist, merely an unselfconscious performer with a astute sense of himself as a whole package: music, visuals, and personality. Gibson Hazard's promo encapsulates that energy perfectly: Lil Nas X, dressed as a nightmare elf in silver spandex, raps "I might bottom on the low, but I top shit/ Switch the genre on you hoes, do a rock hit"... and somehow, it works.
