Lana Del Rey: “Chemtrails Over the Country Club” - 5 mins 40s
Lana Del Rey's perfectly polished portrait of Americana feels strange to watch in the current climate - like looking through a hazy portal at an old film that never was. Yet that cognitive disconnect works perfectly for the singer's tarnished-gleam aesthetic, particularly in this promo for 'Chemtrails Over the Country Club'. The combination of washed-out visuals and lyrics yearning for the Middle American ideal of "Suburbia, The Brentwood Market/ What to do next?" may have proven too saccharine for some viewers... were it not for the film's wild third act. Directing duo BRTHR handle the shift with relish, combining flaming cars, wolves, and broken mirrors to suggest there's still wildness beneath the narrator's picket-fenced present.
