So We Won't Forget

by Andrew MacGregor

Khruangbin: “So We Won't Forget” - 5 mins 43s

Scott Dungate directs this beguiling promo for Khruangbin set in rural Japan, featuring a grieving father and an oversized toy rabbit. Much to the chagrin of local motorists, the two embark on a long cycle ride… one the human protagonist has completed many times before.

His destination is a shrine festooned with sweets, plush toys, and fizzy drinks - a memorial to his late daughter. A meticulously hand-drawn portrait of her is the latest addition to this roadside curio.

Despite the tragic subject matter, there’s a lovely warmth to Dungate and DP Kateb Habib’s visuals, compounded by the track’s mellow funk vibe. Even a bloody fight with a curious police officer has a cathartic and endearing quality to it, and makes the final stretch all the more affecting.
