Down the Rabbit Hole

by Syd Briscoe

Göteborg Film Festival 2022: “The Hypnotic Cinema” - 1 min 45s

Twin Peaks meets The Matrix and more in this intriguing ad for the Göteborg Film Festival 2022. Wearing its influences proudly, the film dares viewers to surrender themselves to the cinematic experience as a woman is both terrorised and delighted by what she sees.

Eyes in mouths, mouths for eyes, and nightmarish rabbit men are just a few of the trippy horrors on display here, with the action rapidly reaching fever pitch and never coming off the boil. Really good films can transport you beyond reality, this suggests, but that doesn't mean they'll take you somewhere you want to go.

Directors John Boisen and Björn Fävremark use washes of neon light and rapid cuts to keep viewers on their toes here, maintaining the film's dreamlike quality and creating a satisfying sense of discombobulation. Brave souls may surrender themselves to the hypnotic experience in person come January 28th.
