Metal Message

by Syd Briscoe

Federal Ministry for Climate Protection: “The Furnace” - 45s

Austrians are reminded to replace their fuel-guzzling furnaces in this entertaining commercial from the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection. A young boy finds himself trapped in a waking nightmare after venturing down into the basement, confronted by a trio of fiery metal singers and their rat band accompaniment.

Director Renee Zhan's handmade approach gives the piece a really tactile feel, with the art style evoking the likes of popular platform game 'It Takes Two'. Which is fitting, considering cooperation to fight climate change is exactly what the film is asking for.

Many communications around global warming have had children at their heart, calling for the protection of their future and asking for change. By plunging a kid into peril here, this film offers a far more immediate example of the dire consequences awaiting the next generation if such messages go unheard.
