Step by step.

Disney: “The Stepdad” - 3 mins 27s

Step-parents have not had an easy ride in popular culture, and Disney are probably more responsible for their demonisation than anyone else, but if they're aiming to make amends then they've made a fabulous start with this charming film depicting the reality of a caring man seeking to integrate himself into an existing family unit.

DAVID has direct experience of this, and can vouch for the accuracy – simplified as it is – of what's shown here. It takes time. It takes patience. It takes years of feeling as though you're only halfway towards being accepted as a full member of the family, no matter how committed you are to them. It amplifies moments of fissure into heartbreak. It's hard… It's really really hard.

This film captures all of that, but – importantly – it also demonstrates how worthwhile it can be. Because, ultimately, children know when they're loved, and their reciprocation of that love will make up for all of the agony.

Music: Gregory Porter
