Debenhams: “A Christmas Like Never Before” - 60s

This saccharine Christmas offering from Debenhams demonstrates just how badly ads can miss the mark during the festive season. The piece is unbearably earnest from the word go, as a young girl recites a poem about how tough the past year has been for kids in lockdown. It's nothing we haven't heard before, and it's nothing we needed to hear again.

There's nothing wrong with such a sober approach, but it feels out of step with the rest of the sector. While others look forward to a bumper, blow-out Christmas (whether it actually happens or not), there's a lack of energy here which doesn't suggest anyone involved is actually excited about the big day. Perhaps the sleeping granddad at the end has the right idea.
