Dinner Dilemma

by Syd Briscoe

Co-op Supermarkets: “What's For Tea?” - 30s

Whether you call it dinner, tea, or even the rarely-seen supper, loudly demanding notification of one's evening meal is a pretty universal childhood experience. This charming ad from the Co-op tackles the question in amusing fashion, as a gaggle of kids take time out of their busy schedules to get fed.

Directors Si&Adís film is both inclusive and light-hearted, with a knowing sense of nostalgia. Whether yelling from the garden, from the bedroom, or being told the kitchen isn't a cafe, many will recognise themselves in the hungry youth on display.

As the use of food banks surges while the economy tanks, this film offers a timely reminder that food security isn't something every kid in the UK can count on. Charitable contributions from businesses like the Co-op are vital at present, and may serve as an example to other major retailers.
