Co-op Supermarkets: “Everyone's Giving Double” - 60s
This lyrical ad for the Co-op arrives as shop workers report rising abuse from customers during the coronavirus pandemic. Of course, when the teenage protagonist says that “everything’s sort of double this year”, she has more palatable topics in mind. These include "double visits and double waving", "double help despite the bubble", and eventually restoring communities with help from the brand’s membership scheme. According to the bicycle-riding poet, "up is the only way we’ll build out of this rubble". Solidarity is another key theme, as the girl urges viewers to hold the line and keep each other safe. Given what some employees have endured in recent months, the message is depressingly urgent.
