Dead cool

by Jason Stone

Coca Cola: “Ghost” - 60s

With Coca-Cola elbowing its way into contention for this year's best Christmas commercial, we thought we'd drop back and look at their Halloween commercial. Like its Christmas counterpart, this is under the 'real magic' umbrella, and, also like the Christmas at, it's story led.

When a boy creeps downstairs to find out what's going on in the shop below his apartment, he sees strange lights near the refrigerated drinks cabinet. Boldly exploring further, he discovers a cute looking ghost desperately trying to get its hands on a bottle of the advertised drink.

The ghost's inability to hold on to anything solid makes it difficult for the boy to help until he has an inspired idea. We can imagine there was quite a lot of consternation at Coca-Cola HQ at the notion of a 'dead' bottle of their pride and joy, but to their credit they ran with it, and the outcome is very heart-warming.
