Go Fourth and multiply.

by Jason Stone

Channel 4: “Altogether Different” - 1 min 40s

You have to love Channel 4. As it approaches its fortieth anniversary next year, it remains a purveyor of the kind of broadcasting that you simply won't find anywhere else. That was true in 1982 when – as its name implies – it became the fourth of four options available to television viewers in the UK; and it remains true today even though there are literally thousands of channels to choose from.

This film from 4 Creative's Alex Boutell perfectly epitomises Channel 4's unique spirit, Providing an apposite reminder of its cultural importance as the Philistines running the country threaten to sell it for a handful of magic beans.

Consciously or not, Boutell has created a campaign film. By aligning Channel 4's 'weirdness' with an idea this country has about itself, this film might just persuade more of the public to get behind the need to protect the broadcaster from the avaricious forces looking to profit from its sale.

It's wonderful that so many of the 'celebrities' included in this film have been made famous by the broadcaster, and almost all of them are unconventional in one way or another. They are like the performers of the world's most wonderful circus, gathered together under the 'big top', and ready to provide us with the most unusual show we could imagine.

Channel 4 is an incredibly important institution and we must do whatever it takes to ensure it survives in its current form… anything else will move us a step closer to cultural Armageddon.
