Eager beaver

by Syd Briscoe

Castorama: “Castor” - 90s

French hardware retailer Castorama appeal to busy beavers everywhere with this quirky commercial. The wordplay involved may go over the heads of English speakers ('castor' being French for 'beaver'), but the action transcends language as a dad and his two kids move to a fixer-upper house in the countryside. Needless to say, there's plenty of work to be done around the place.

The film adopts a charming sense of magical realism when the dad's adventures in DIY cause him to slowly transform into a beaver - teeth, fur, claws, and all. Lovely character design and considered pacing from director Tom Kuntz keeps viewers onside for the film's 90" run... and left wondering about its final hints at romance.
