Bumble: “Dating These Days: Race and Fetishisation” - 2 mins 50s

Woman-led dating app Bumble has launched a new campaign dedicated to addressing the issues faced by those trying to date in 2020. Beyond the question of what safe sex looks like during a pandemic, the campaign interrogates modern masculinity, intimacy, and other concepts which affect us whichever way we swipe.

This instalment covers race and fetishisation - something routinely encountered on apps where a picture is your main source of information. The conversations captured here are candid and considered, and most importantly offer minority people a platform to speak about their experiences in their own words.

From discussing internalised racism to relaying some of the ridiculous comments they've received online (spoiler: "I only date Black girls" isn't a compliment), this is an informative piece of work which should be required viewing before users are given permission to swipe. Kudos to director Laura Scrivano for handling such delicate subject matter with verve.
