Bringing Christmas warmth.

by Jason Stone

Bord Gáis Energy: “Imagine A Better Way” - 60s

This charming commercial from Ireland opens with a young gas engineer explaining to his mother that he's volunteered to be on call on Christmas Day. It's not clear whether this is an act of altruism or a pursuit of double pay, but – either way – he's made it easier for colleagues with young families to be at home and that's very considerate.

Having repaired a boiler for a family while while being sweetly watched by their young daughter, he heads home for a bite to eat, and it all looks a bit sad for him. The following day he's called back to the same house, and it looks as though their boiler has broken down again... but all is not as it seems.

If we were to be nit-picky then we'd have to point out that he'd really be in a bit of a dilemma if things did unfold this way. He wouldn't really be able to join the family for Christmas dinner because he's on call, and no matter how well-intentioned their shenanigans, they've actually landed him in it. But we're going to assume he stayed just long enough to let them know how grateful he was before pretending to field a call, and saying there was someone who needed his help!
