Taping Together

by Syd Briscoe

Bid TV: “Tape Out Hate” - 2 mins 20s

The conversation around diversity in sport has undergone seismic shifts over the past few years, from players taking a knee to protest racism to numerous initiatives encouraging non-white players to get on the field. This hard-hitting Canadian film takes things to the ice rink, as the Hockey Diversity Alliance launch their partnership with Budweiser.

While censored images of slur-filled messages and texts may be shocking, it's the evident pain when players discuss their experiences which really hits home here. One guy saying he wouldn't want his daughter to take up his beloved sport if she had to suffer the same abuse, really emphasises what's at stake for a generation of potential athletes.

Tape branded with anti-racism slogans may be a small gesture, but it's one which will allow those supportive of a more diverse game to stand up and be counted. Given that the product has already sold out, here's hoping bigoted fans get the message and keep their abusive nonsense to themselves.
