The Refreshed Prince

by Syd Briscoe

Bel-Air: “Trailer” - 2 mins 40s

Distressingly, the young person DAVID showed this film to said "Looks good, no idea what the original is about though". While he shrivels into an aged husk, perhaps that's the best light in which to view this trailer for the dramatic remake of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

While those familiar with the 90s sitcom starring Will Smith will be trying to match new faces to familiar names throughout the two-and-a-half minute film, younger audiences are more likely to be intrigued by the fish out of water scenario and glossy look at how the other half live. Hints of violence and intrigue only sweeten the deal.

However, this is so far removed from the original show in terms of tone and personality that it begs the question: what's the point of attaching it at all? The attention boost of refreshing an existing franchise, yes, but does that make this more than fanfiction with a budget?

Regardless, this is a slick introduction to a series which seems set to appeal to fans of Empire, Entourage, and other mansion-set dramas. While we imagine there'll be less rapping than in the original, we wait with bated breath to see if DJ Jazzy Jeff makes a cameo appearance.
