Distorted Light Beam

by Syd Briscoe

Bastille: “Distorted Light Beam” - 3 mins 02s

'The Matrix' meets Black Mirror in this intriguing promo for Bastille's latest single 'Distorted Lightbeam'. The London quartet dive into a dystopic future in which humans can experience multiple realities via a sinister neural implant, as witnessed by a single engineer (His Dark Materials actor Remmie Milner) who understands the grim state of the physical world around them.

Director Jak Payne and cinematographer Anna Smoronova do a good job of crafting a world which feels at once futuristic and all too current, with decaying architecture occupied by residents who only truly exist within their own heads. After a year-plus of lockdowns, Dan Smith's cry of "If this is life/I'm choosing fiction" resonates big time.
