Stream Shaming

by Syd Briscoe

BT: “Pixelated Paula” - 60s

BT poke fun at the absurdity that is modern working life in this amusing ad. In a narrative which may hit too close to home for some viewers, a woman finds her career advancement ground to a halt once Covid-19 forces everything to move to Zoom... and her WiFi can't keep up.

Director Tim Godsall handles what could feel like a mean-spirited plot deftly, introducing viewers to the concept of 'stream shaming' as Paula fights for her place among interns with zippier internet connections—all narrated by a gently teasing voiceover which articulates her deepest fears.

As freedoms are rolled back amidst rising case numbers across the UK, the prospect of another surge in internet use will have those in Paula's position scrambling to find similar quality guarantees. If not, perhaps it's Broadband Bob's lucky year for a promotion.
