Words are magic

by Jason Stone

BBC Radio 6: “Kitchen” - 27s

This is a close relation of a technique which has been used on the BBC before to emphasise the beauty of the spoken word... but last time it was on behalf of Radio 4. Here the film is promoting Radio 6 and it's Irish actor Cillian Murphy whose words are being brought to life.

It's a beguiling effect, and one that really makes you pay attention to what's being said. Murphy has a superbly engaging voice, but seldom can it have sounded as mesmeric as it does here as he praises Frank Zappa's creativity, as his words are amplified by their appearance on the screen.

DAVID can't help feeling there could be a BBC4 series in it if there was a way of streamlining this animation technique... surely, the viewers who happily watched a canal barge make its way across the country for several hours or stared at a sleigh crossing the snow would be willing to direct their attention to the words of a DJ forming on the screen as a beautifully curated playlist unfolds.
