TV Klaxon: Hawkeye.

by Andrew MacGregor

Late in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jeremy Renner's superpowerless Clint Barton aka Hawkeye secured icon status with the line: "The city is flying, we're fighting an army of robots, and I have a bow and arrow. None of this makes sense."

Such low-key badassery makes Barton one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most grounded heroes, complementing the flamboyant antics of Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Thor, et al. Following the divisive MCU space opera Eternals, Disney+'s Hawkeye offers a festive palate cleanser.

Rhys Thomas of Stink and Bert & Bertie of Object & Animal direct three episodes each of the six-part series, wherein Barton and would-be archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) fight criminals at Christmas. It's a neat callback to Iron Man 3's Yuletide setting, and continues the Die Hard tradition of tinsel and turmoil. As the official trailer puts it, "the best gifts come with a bow".
