Dark Energy have added Steve Cope to their already capable roster. The director's reel contains ads for car makers, toy stores, charities, government departments, and more, with many other sectors on his wishlist.
"Having Steve join our roster is incredibly exciting," says Matt Brown - Dark Energy's managing director. "He has an enviable archive of brilliant work and a bottomless well of skills to bring to new projects. We look forward to hitting the ground running and collaborating on many projects together."
As well as a knack for VFX, Brown and co were drawn to Cope's ability to handle scripts with a strong dramatic component. This command of tone is evident in a National Water Safety Forum commercial from 2022, another year blighted by drownings in open water.
The lead of this 30" film tries to jump in to save someone, but he's stopped by his exact doubleŚcommon sense made flesh. For once, instincts are the enemy. The conflict is portrayed as a dance that causes the protagonist's phone to land on the ground, and makes Cope's ad stand out from other water safety ads.
