Jacobine van Hellemond joins Curate Films.

by Andrew MacGregor

Curate Films reckon new signing Jacobine van Hellemond is "one of the most exciting directors on the circuit". This is in large part down to 'The Knuckle Princess'—a 2021 short film about Japanese baseball trailblazer Eri Yoshida.

Van Hellemond's assured portrait shows how Yoshida defied the odds and became the first woman drafted by a Japanese men's professional baseball team. Not content to watch baseball on the television or sit on the sidelines, young Yoshida practises pitching whenever and wherever she can. Her televised debut in 2009 caps off a super Dutch-Japanese effort.

It's why Dan Dickenson calls Van Hellemond "a rare directing talent" and "talented observational director". He also says: "Both Madeline Sanderson and I are very excited to welcome her to Curate."

In the meantine, check out Van Hellemond's recent ad for Moeders voor Moeders [Mothers for Mothers], a pharmaceutical company that specialises in fertility treatment. The director draws lovely performances from her multigenerational cast, and celebrates the power of girlhood and womanhood in 2023.
